How to Sell a Used Car Privately in Sacramento
· 7 min read
Selling your own car takes more effort than trading it in, and usually pays more. Most of the work is up front. Do it well and the actual sale goes quickly.
Get the paperwork in order first
- Title. Find the title (the "pink slip"). If a bank still holds it because of a loan, contact them about how to release the lien before the sale.
- Smog. Find out whether your car needs a smog certificate for the sale. Our smog guide explains the basics.
- Registration. Make sure the registration is current, or say clearly that it is not.
- Records. Gather receipts and service history. They help the sale more than almost any other single thing.
Clean it and photograph it
Wash it, vacuum it, and clear out your stuff. Take photos in daylight at a plain location: front, back, both sides, each seat row, the dashboard with the odometer showing, the engine bay and the tires. Photograph any dents or scratches too. Honest photos prevent wasted trips.
Price it from real comparisons
Look at what similar cars are listed for around Sacramento: same year, mileage range and condition. Check a pricing guide too. Price slightly above what you will accept, if you are willing to negotiate. A fair price gets calls in the first week, when interest is highest.
Write the listing
- Lead with year, make, model and trim, then mileage.
- Say why you are selling.
- List maintenance you have done, with dates if you have them.
- Describe problems plainly. A noisy lifter or a weak A/C is better disclosed than discovered on a test drive.
- State the title and smog situation.

Deal with buyers carefully
- Expect some lowball offers and some tire kickers. Decide your bottom number in advance.
- Meet in a public place. Go on the test drive with the buyer, and check their license first.
- Do not accept a check, wire or payment app transfer you cannot verify. For larger amounts, complete the sale at the buyer's bank.
- Do not hand over the title until the payment is real. See scam patterns to avoid.
Finish the sale
- Write up a bill of sale with the date, price, VIN, mileage and both parties' names and signatures. Each person keeps a copy.
- Sign the title as the seller and record the odometer reading.
- Tell the DMV you sold the car, using the DMV's release of liability process. This matters: it keeps you from being held responsible for tickets or accidents after the sale. The DMV sets a short deadline, so check it and do it the same day.
- Cancel or change your insurance only after the sale is complete and reported.
- Remove any toll tags, parking permits or personal items.
Mark the listing sold
Tell the site and any other places you listed, so buyers stop calling.
Check the rules. California DMV, smog and title rules change. Confirm current requirements with the California DMV and the Bureau of Automotive Repair before you rely on this page.
